Hello,
I want to purchase a 14′ boat. It has a 5hp Briggs and Stratton. What I want to know is, do you know the approximate cost of insurance, or how much registratio would cost? I live in Utah, and I tried looking on the DMV’s website for all of this, but couldnt find it. The boat ad does not have the year, but here it is if you would like to see what it looks like :) Thank you for all of your help!

This is the boat I am looking at..what is your opinion on it? Will I need to register it even if its only 5hp?

If you can, please look at this boat also, and tell me which one would be the best bang for the buck! Link: http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=6106878&lpid=44&cat=147

To me the best deal is number two. It is already licensed, has twice the horsepower motor, has a new trailer and it is $200.00 less cost.
If you offer anything less the more to you.
It is a good deal at any price you get it for.
    Take care.

you don’t need boat insurance, it would be a waste of money in your situation, and registration should be around 5% of the value of the boat. or maybe around $50 bucks, no more than $100.

And you have to register the trailer seaperate, that will be prob $50 bucks, but i know nothing about utah.
Basically, here, a trailer is just like a car, as far as registration goes.
The boat is a DNR issue.

if its not required then it may cost more to insure the boat then its worth over a few years.

The best answer would be to use the DNR website (Department of Natural Resource). Where i live you do not have to register a motor if its less than 6hp. Also here you do not have to register the trailer. Usually the insurance should run no more than 100 to 150 dollars a year if that. Registration is 5% of the sale price. There should be a cap if it exceeds x amount of dollars.
