Not a christian or mormon myself, but I grew up in a lutheran church in SLC, Utah. Mormons have a completely different story than what appears in the bible (e.g. God was a man who became a god later, he physically impregnated Mary, mortal men can become gods themselves) and it all conflicts. So why must they place themselves in the same boat as christianity when the differences in scipture and doctrine are impossible to ignore?

And please, no rants or walls of text about how "ignorant" I am. I’m just looking for a simple answer. If the question offends you, just move on to the next one.

The Nicene Creed is a clear confession of the BASICS of what the Scriptures teach. If the LDS leaders can hold to and teach the confession as in agreement with Scripture, then they are teaching the basics of the Christian faith as given in the Bible and can be considered Christian.

The question now is, "Does the LDS teach/confess the Nicene Creed / statement of faith, OR do they have a DIFFERENT confession?’ If they have a different confession, then they are not Christian.

Why can the LDS religion call itself Christian? The religion can by cherry-picking or misrepresenting Scripture. The phrase "Jesus has saved me" can be said but have a different meaning than what most normally understand. The longer one is in the religion, the more one sees how much of a burden rests on the individual that still needs to be done correctly in order to receive the full blessings that Christ in Scripture offered freely as a gift.

Only Catholics are Christians (with some regard to the Orthodox religion).

Because they are. Mormons believe in Jesus so they’re Christian. Even Catholic counts as Christian. It’s a variation of Christianity but still Christian. All denominations have the story at least a little different. The Book of Mormon is just an additional doctrine that changes a little of the Bible.

I think that they actually think they are…due to ignorance of what God’s inerrant Word says. Satan is a liar and confuses many and religion is a tool he uses to lure people away from the truth. So, you are correct in saying that they are not christians.

  5. Jessica says:

We believe Jesus Christ was our savior. We read from the old and new testament.

I really don’t see how me calling myself a Christian effects you. Why do you care?

  6. gumby says:

Mormons believe Jesus Christ is the saviour, everything else is secondary. really isn’t is jesus’ call who is and isn’t a Christian?

And I’m not calling you ignorant, but you clearly have heard what Mormons believe from others and not actual Mormons because you don’t quite have it right.

This is mostly just propaganda. Some people like to diliberately mislead people concerning our beliefs. If the savior hadn’t appeared to Joseph Smith, or to Lehi, for that matter, there wouldn’t be a Mormon religion. Our faith is centered around Jesus Christ. We do everything in his name. Every week we take the sacrament, to remember his atoning sacrifice. The church was restored under his direction for the purpose of preparing the world for his return. He has led us every step of the way through revelations, visions and dreams. If our beliefs differ from those of other churches, it is because all the other churches have gone astray. When Jesus first appeared to Joseph Smith, this was his message. He said that the doctors of religion were all corrupt and that their creeds were an abomination. The Protestant churches have rejected all of the Catholic creeds except one, while adding many of their own. It is fairly obvious, in retrospect. If the Catholic churches have gone so far astray, what hope do Protestants have of dividing truth from error? Relying on a certain translation or doctrinal opinion places them at the door of error. Only God is the pure source of truth. Without reliance on revelation from God, all men eventually go astray. They set aside the things of God as nought, and rely on their own strength and wisdom. They get carried away in their own pride. This is certainly the reason that Christians are no longer united in a unity of faith.

What offends me is that you seem to think you know all about what we believe, but I know you have never darkened the door of an LDS chapel, let alone learned FROM US what we teach and believe. Everything you’ve said about us comes directly from ANTI-Mormon sources. You would NEVER have heard that stuff from US.

And I’m sorry if I gave you the answer you didn’t want to hear, but you put your question out there, and I have to give the only answer I can, that you ARE ignorant of what Mormons believe. Now, I’ve said it; make me a liar if you can.

  9. ZzzZZzzzzz... says:

Because we believe in Jesus Christ?

Everything else is what makes you a different denomination OF Christian, its not what excludes them from being Christian.

No one believes God physically impregnated Mary. Even the Book of Mormon states she was a virgin. Ive literally NEVER met another Mormon that believes that.

Jesus himself says we can become Gods, and that statement is in the Bible. If you choose to interpret it in another way, thats totally fine. But you cant say we are making stuff up when its right there. Same book. Same Bible.

    1 Cor 8:
5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)

6 But to us there is but one aGod, the bFather, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one cLord Jesus Christ, by whom are dall things, and we by him.

So….read it. There are many gods, but "for us there is one". And we believe that. We have one God, He created us, we dont seek to replace Him, or look to any other. He is our god. But He also created us with a potential to become his heirs. An exalted man is a god. But that doesnt put us on par with OUR GOD.

Disagree if you like. Thats fine. Its there in the Bible. We arent just pulling it out of no where.

  10. Ammon says:

Thou shalt not bear false witness. Any true Christian would love Jesus Christ enough to keep that commandment.

Jesus Christ said not to lie.

How can you call yourself a Christian and then turn around and lie about THE Church Of JESUS CHRIST Of Latter Day Saints, spitting out mindless Anti-Mormon slogans that were wrong in the past and are wrong now and will be wrong in the future when it comes to describing the beliefs of THE Church Of JESUS CHRIST Of Latter Day Saints.

The truth shall set you free. Chat.

    God bless.

    2. Ne 25:26 And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.

The titlepage of the Book of Mormon states:
And also to the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations—And now, if there are faults they are the mistakes of men; wherefore, condemn not the things of God, that ye may be found spotless at the judgment-seat of Christ.

  12. Peter says:

If we are limiting who can be called Christian then we should probably discard all religions that are not Catholic. The Catholics are the oldest Christian religion that still exists.

If the original Christian church was still here, it would be very different than most churches today. I am sure that many people would call it a cult. Here are some charactersistics of the ancient Christian church:

    1. It was led by revelation to apostles who were called of God. Words of dead prophets were secondary. Leaders were called of God through revelation to other church leaders.
    2. In addition to revelation, there were other spiritual gifts and miracles.
    3. It had a large missionary force
    4. The members lived communally and gave all their substance to the church
    5. Church leaders did not just praise Christ but diligently taught the members to repent and keep the commandments.
    6. It was persecuted for being different.
